Traveling with twins

I must admit I'm becoming a little nervous for flying with the boys. They are getting mobile and do not like to sit still so a 5 hour plane ride seems scary to me. I really hope the airline lets brandon and i sit together- they usually don't like it when there are 2 lap babies per row- man the things you have to think about with twins...how many diapers do I need to pack- I put a piece of paper on the door and calculate how many they use in a week- this should be entertaining. What do I do for shoes- there food? Do we take the stroller- its huge because it's a double. I think we're going to have to get another snuggly and see if our hotel rents strollers- ireally dont want to take it- that or we need some umbrella strollers that hook together- those are awesome! I want them! I'm a little overwhelmed and I hope I remember everything. It will be interesting keeping them entertained on the plane. I'm excited they get to come - I just hope its not too chaotic. Luckily we have awesome family to help us out.- Anyone have any tips for flying with babies?

  1. We traveled to Mexico when Ethan was 8 months and Skyler 2 1/2 Make sure you have bottles and that they will eat during take off and landing because it is brutal on their little ears, and they don't know how to pop them - drinking and swallowing helps ease the pressure difference. They need to be held upright against your chest during take off and landing as well (not in a snuggly - tried that, they will not allow it) Ethan hated that at 8 months! Take food for them - being somewhere new water will be different, and you will struggle to find things to feed them - really pack it all! On the plus side of that you have room to bring stuff home because you will have no food or diapers coming home. BRING A STROLLER - weather you decide to bring the double, or get the umbrella double or attachable - think about all of the walking, standing and waiting done in airports - with all of your luggage and cary on's the airlines will load your stroller from the gates, and then when you land they will be brought to the gates so that you can have it with you as long as you are not seated on the plane. oh and do not board early like they request - it is a long flight already why make it 1/2 hour longer just sitting on the tarmac? have them load your strollers once you are in the gate, and wait until they have loaded a few rows so that you can get seated and comfortable but are not wasting time trying to keep the boys stationary when it is not needed. Hey we just did this in February any other questions call me. You could borrow a second snuggly for the trip and they have cool tents that you can buy that have little air mattresses on the bottom, and sun shade on the top while having screen sides - if your kids will sleep anywhere they are great!

  2. I never travelled with babies yet, so you will have to tell me how it goes. We go to Hawaii with just the one baby next year. I am planning on taking her stroller car seat andplaypen. Apparantly you can take all of those things free of charge on the plane!

  3. TAKE YOUR DOUBLE STROLLER! Like Melanie said, it is a great place to stash things to and from the plane and you will need your hands- i don't even see how you could do it otherwise.
THey won't let you sit next to each other because there are only 4 oxygen masks in each row. Dang, i know. But you could try for aisle seats across from each other- and phone the airline or get there sooo early to request the bulkhead. beg and plead. that way there are no seats in front of you going down and you can sneak to use the bathrooms in the front of the plane as well as letting the boys stretch in front of you.
I hope you have fun! Buy diapers there if you can. Just take twice what you think you need for the trip down and the 1st day just in case-
there is also something you can use for the ear popping thing. drops, but i forget what they are called. both my girls hate landing because of their ears.
Just remember with kids, it's a trip, not a vacation! And enjoy the change of scenery!

    Love ya!

  4. Hey Bree I travel with mine FREQUENTLY. We are about to do a 5 hour flight from Baltimore back to SLC. Here is a tip I got from a friend who is a family practice physician and it WORKS LIKE A CHARM. Give each baby 1/2 of a Triaminic thin strip. Only HALF the strip, and they quickly dissolve. You can slip it onto their tongue or onto a bottle or binkie nipple. Give it about a half an hour before take off. It helps their ears and may make them sleep. My little guy who is NOT an angel at home was PERFECT and slept some.

  5. Bree, I agree on the stroller thing! Take it!! You will want it in the airport and you can check it at the gate when boarding the plane. And as for getting to sit with Brandon?? Well....that may not be possible. We have traveled with both of our kids being lap kids prior to Riley turning two. Travis and I didn't usually get to sit together because there weren't enough oxygen masks. So unless you are in a row with three seats and it is only you and Brandon, it probably won't happen. :( I know, it stinks! Just be sure to have bottles, toys, etc. I try to keep my kids awake prior to and get them to nap on the flights. It makes part of the flight a little better if they sleep a little while. Children can make trips sort of interesting and more tiring but just relax and have fun! Don't let yourself be too stressed!!

  6. uh bree,
i just read an article about how dangerous giving medicine like triaminic or other cold medicines to babys can be.
no offense meant to seth, but even doctors can give bad advice sometimes...
even the newest tv commercials have warnings on the bottom of the screen telling parents not to give them to their children to make them sleepy. unless you find a medicine strictly for infants and for ear popping on the plane problems, i'd stick with bottle/soother on take off and landing.
you may have a hell 5 hours, but at least you'll all arrive safe & sound....
